“Microwaves for ISM Applications”

In addition to the wide spread use of microwave in satellite communication and radar it has other important applications in industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) fields. A brief account of microwave applications in these fields would be discussed along with our contributions in this field. Characterisation of dielectric and magnetic materials, Microwave Imaging, study of biological materials and coupling media are the topics dealt here.

Electromagnetic (microwave and radio wave) imaging has wide applications in non-destructive evaluation, ground penetrating radar (GPR), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target identification etc.  Till recently microwave medical imaging has not found wide application due to its longer wave length and hence poor resolution. However, this technique has gained greater momentum in medical field, now due to the development of new measurement techniques, proper coupling medium and fast computation. Microwave images are maps of the electrical property distributions in the body. Cancer detection is based on this contrast of electrical properties. Tissue dielectric properties in the microwave spectrum depend mainly on the bound water content of tissues. Hence, it is highly beneficial for imaging of soft tissues.

Complex Permittivity of materials in the form of sheet can be evaluated from reflection/transmission measurements.  Complex Permittivity of materials in the compound form can be found.  The proposed method does not need focusing mechanism for the incident microwave. Real and imaginary parts of complex permittivity can be simultaneously evaluated within the limit of accuracy. The detection of hidden objects can efficiently be made using gating option in time domain. A study on the results of the object detection  shows that it can be effectively applied in GPR for mine detection.

Conducting Polymers for EMI Shielding”

Many Electrical devices generate electromagnetic radiation often at radio and microwave frequencies. This can malfunction nearby electrical devices. The plastic casings used in many of these devices are transparent to such radiations. By coating the inside of the plastic casing with a conductive surface, this radiation can be blocked. This can be best achieved by the use of conducting polymers hence EMI shielding.
