VCSEL PERFORMANCES ANALYSIS FOR 60 GHZ WIRELESS NETWORKS WITH INTERMEDIATE-FREQUENCY RADIO-OVER-FIBER INFRASTRUCTURE

Abstract

We present results from the French FUI8 project ORIGIN entitled “Optical-Radio Infrastructure for Gigabit/s Indoor Networks” that focuses on the Home Area Network (HAN) market concerning the 60 GHz multi-Gigabit/s wireless communications system. The talk will put a focus on the performance analysis of VCSEL in such intermediate-frequency 60 GHz Radio-over-Fiber (IF-RoF) application. VCSEL are key devices to ensure a low-cost of the infrastructure. The mm-waves signals are down-converted to a lower Intermediate Frequency (IF~5GHz) in order to directly modulate the laser intensity (IM-DD). This solution enables the use of low cost optoelectronic and RF components. The Transmitter Optical Sub Assembly (TOSA) was made using packaging technology developed by ORIGIN partners. An 8µm aperture VCSEL from ULM photonics designed for 10Gbit/s digital application has been mounted on a Glass/Sapphire substrate (thickness 500µm) and integrated on a flex PCB using a 50Ω access line. The optical interface was conceived using a LC/PC receptacle base and a ball lens to enhance the optical coupling with a 62.5µm MMF. A threshold current of 0.7mA, a slope efficiency of 0.36W/A and a RIN lower than -140dB/Hz at 8mA were obtained over the radio operation bandwidth.  At the end, considering the link system we got 12.2 % of EVM using a 10 Gbit/s ROSA from Finisar with 10 dB optical losses to avoid the ROSA saturation and 8 mA VCSEL biasing current with the RF power injected to the VCSEL at -16 dBm. The paper will develop on RIN, non-linearity and RF transmission properties of the VCSEL and their impact on the link. The presentation will also highlight recent progress toward 15GHz bandwidth VCSEL and laser matching, before concluding on prospectives.
